we love it but there's no future

So Victor and I had a talk over dinner tonight about futures....

Basically, we love dating, going out, enjoying each other's company BUT there is ONE HUGE ISSUE keeping us from an official "relationship" - - - we have NO future together.

Why?? might you ask. Here's the problem - I was raised Roman Catholic and my entire family is Catholic. Victor is a Jew. Not only a Jew, but an Orthodox Jew which means converts are not accepted, it's a blood thing. His children must be jewish and kids inherit their mother's blood so their mother must be jewish. His family would disown him for marrying a Catholic, mine would disown me for marrying a Jew.......

sooooo basically, we're just having a good time. I think it would take a massive global event for the two of us to have a future together but there's no reason we can't enjoy dating, right? Figures the first guy I really felt connected and special with is the ONE person that would be nearly impossible to marry!!!

Oh well, i'm coming to grips with this and continuing to enjoy dating without commitment!

tomorrow i'm at Harper 8-10:30 to become a defibrillator trainer - exciting eh? lol!
Week's Schedule:
Wednesday - Defib Training 8-10:30, Shopping and Purse Party with cousin 5pm-???
Thursday - Work at Harper 7-3:30, car shopping :) , dinner with Victor maybe
Friday - Work at Receiving with David 7-3:30, home to Auburntucky, then off to his cottege for the weekend!! Super excited!!

BACK SUNDAY NIGHT!! Have a wonderful rest of your week ya'll!!

amazing

just having an amazing time.....

finished up my externship on friday...it was kinda sad cause it means i'm no longer one-on-one with my nurse mentor but it's exciting cause i'm on my own and get to work with lots of nurses. Alice, my nurse, was kinda my protector. she taught me a lot of "practical" nursing, self-confidence, and standing up to myself. She introduced me to working in Detroit with a population of patients and workers that's VERY different from what I'm used to. You think the Rec is diverse, HAHA! yea right, that's what i'd like to call "fake" diversity on most occasions. granted, there are some for real people at the rec but a lot of it is hyped up and not realistic at all. it's all drama to me now, this year's gonna be different.

this year is about me. i'm gonna really work in my classes, prep for the NCLEX all year, work a little at the rec (5-8 hours/week) and not take any shit or be walked on like the last two years, work 12-24 hours at the hospital each week, take care of me by making sure i've got work-out time and "me time" scheduled in, and make sure i've left time for friends and going out with victor or whoever else.

i want to be a lot stronger, both physically and mentally, by the end of this school year. my goal is to go straight into emergency nursing at Childrens or maybe Henry Ford bi-county or main so i can work with both adults and children. as much as i swore off adult patients, i've really enjoyed working with them and people have pointed out i'm good at it. so we'll see....

my nursing skills have taken off flying and aren't coming down anytime soon. i am getting so good at so many things i would've never done in clinical or in the classroom. i prioritize WAY better than before and like i said, my skills are 100% better! i love feeling so much more confident. if ANYTHING happens at the rec this year, watch out, i'm coming and not even breaking a sweat ;)

victor and i are still going out which is really nice. he's really good to me and i like him a lot. i've gotten past the "whoa, he's a doctor" although it's still fun to say. he's just a normal guy trying to make his way through the world and that's cool. we go out a couple times each week, e-mail almost every day, and talk on the phone a lot. we haven't had a "feelings talk" (as Erin called it) but this weekend and next weekend we're supposed to be spending quite a bit of time together so it may happen eventually. i'm liking things how they are right now, not really antsy for that to change.

hope everyone enjoys their weekend. i LOVE that i have it off and can totally just be me and take care of me :) MISS SO MANY OF YOU BUT I'LL SEE YOU SOON!!!

Things are just good...

mood: loved loved
music: Next time he cheats!

So life is good, I don't really have many complaints!

I'm for sure continuing as a Student Nurse Associate at Harper during the school year. Going to work down there twice a week. It'll help a lot with bringing in some extra money. I should be buying a car by the end of September. I love it down there. I've been in amazing situations, crisis situations, interpreted spanish so many times it's ridiculous, and I'm learning ALL THE TIME. Everyone is sooooo great and funny.

I miss my rec people but I've made lots of new friends at the DMC. And I've had a chance to spend some quality time with David which is cool. I think we're getting each other on a new level. New respect for each other, our jobs, skills....etc. I'm hopefully going to be shadowing him for a day at Receiving which I'm excited for!

The doctor! Definitely still going out with him and it's amazing. He was going into psych but last night he told me he's changing and signing a contract with bi-county ER which is way cool. It's were he did his last rotation and he loved it so much, he wants to stay! I also found out he's a certified hypnotherapist! How cool is that?!? Haha. I just feel so at ease and comfortable with him. He understands my insane schedule, what I'm going through and I can do the same for him. It's a very good thing and I hope it lasts through the school year! I am loving it!

LIFE IS GOOD MY FRIENDS! Next year will be a shift or two at the rec, two shifts downtown, lots of schooling and studying, friends, and now a dating life :)

mood: drained drained
music: It's 5 o'clock somewhere!

Wow, so yesterday at work was insane.

Everything was boring all morning and at around 3 pm, it all changed so fast my head was spinning. My nurse mentor and I were in with a patient and out of no where he stopped breathing and coded on us. We had to resucitate him and everything. My head was spinning so fast, i only remember portions but my CPR training kicked in and I helped with the code, bagging him, etc. We got him back. So i helped transfer him to ICU, got back to the floor, and was told we had a transfer patient that had just arrived. So I went in to help get her settled in. She was wheezing a bit so we gave her a breathing treatment and out of no where, she takes one big gasp and boom, stops breathing! I'm like, HOLY SHIT, here we go again. So once again, you could hear overhead "Code blue, 8 Webber South". It was like deja vous except it was freaky. This code lasted a lot longer cause she was really hard to bring back but we did and then I helped transfer her to ICU as well.

OMG, seriously, my adrenaline was THROUGH THE ROOF! I was proud of myself yet completely freaked out by the whole thing. It didn't hit me til after. I was completely calm during the whole thing. I know I was sweating but I kept a clear head and maintained composure. After it all though, I was shaking like mad. It's gonna take some getting used to, serious getting used to! But oh well, we did a good job, got both patients back, and the floor went on like nothing had happened. Let me tell you, I collapsed in exhaustion when I got home!

Two Code Blues in less than 90 min....that's ridiculous! All in all, it went well, but it still scared the crap out of me! Guess experience is a good thing cause there is no way to prepare yourself for something like that. You can do CPR on a dummy every year in your CPR class but until you actually perform CPR, have someone in front of you who's got one foot in the grave, and you are responsible to do everything possible to bring them back....you can't really understand what CPR is or realize just how unprepared you are for that situation.

Speaking of CPR, i'm going into the rec tomorrow to get my re-cert stuff so I can mail in my nursing requirements. I'm geting a bit close to the deadline again, oh well, I'll make it just like every year! Have a wonderful weekend ya'll. I'm off this weekend and that makes me VERY VERY happy!!

having a good time!

Jul. 3rd, 2006 | 10:50 am

So things are going amazingly well! I love my job at Harper, it's amazing and I'm learning soooo much! It's so cool what they let me do and what I have learned in such a short time. Nursing school is gonna be MUCH easier now that I've got this experience going for me! I def want to continue to work there through the school year!

Also, def going on a date next Tuesday with a doctor :) Haha, go figure! Super excited about that one!!!

I miss my rec peeps but I've got to say, I'm not missing the rec all that much right now!

HAPPY FOURTH EVERYONE!! I've got today and tomorrow off!! Wohoo! I worked back to back 12 hour shifts this weekend and I NEED a day off! Yesterday afternoon, something was in the air at the DMC. The patients started going crazy around 4pm or so....ask David, it was the same way at Receiving. Weird eh?

So tonight's meeting at the rec was an absolute waste of my time.

BUT, on a happy note!

Tomorrow I start at Harper Hospital! I am soooooo excited and nervous and just crazy about this! AND, to top it off, the trauma coordinator at Beaumont wants to hire me as an instructor in her Safety City, USA campaign! How flippin cool is that. Haha, i'll work for the DMC and Beaumont...i think that might violate some unspoken policy!

OH WELL! I have to take my last logic quiz and then I am home to sleepy because my 5am alarm is gonna SUCK tomorrow morning!

WISH ME LUCK!

So, I made my decision (THANK YOU to everyone who helped me out with advice and such...)

I am working at Harper! I got my call for my official offer of employment and I said yes. It's worth it, the experience will be amazing and if all goes well, I might go into pediatric cardiology and this will prep me as well as I could possibly be!!

So now, I have to get a physical, drug screen, TB test, titers drawn, two orientations, a bunch of paperwork and I'm official.

I think Mom and I are going shopping for cute scrubs and stuff at some point. I'm waiting for my manager to call and let me know if I need anything specific like a color or equipment or something. YAY! I have a nursing job and I'm super-de-duper excited. I'm gonna make some SERIOUS money too!! New car? I think so!!

Scrubs are comfy...i love that it's the uniform for my job!
Have a wonderful beautiful day!

OH AND I'M 21 TOMORROW!!!! I get to work and take a midterm at night, hell of a birthday huh?

Help Me Please!

May. 21st, 2006 | 12:56 pm
mood: confused confused
music: Better Life by Keith Urban

So things have been kinda crazy lately but I figured I'd update.... I could use some help on this.

So I was supposed to possibly have a camp job up in Lansing. I'd be a Programs Director for this camp, I'd move there for nearly 3 months this summer, etc...it was gonna be great. I sent him my address to send me the application packet and two weeks worth of good phone interview times. But then the director suddenly stopped e-mailing me. That was about 3-4 weeks ago.

Soooo I applied at the DMC (Detroit Medical Center) and a few other hospitals for some random jobs. Really wanted a Student Nurse Associate position at Childrens but it didn't work cause i had literally just missed the deadline. So I applied at Detroit Receiving and at Harper University Hospital. Well, Harper called me just a few days later and I got an interview for the Interventional Cardiology Unit, 8 Webber South to be exact. So I interviewed there on Thursday morning and I GOT THE JOB!! So I will be working as a Nurse Extern for the summer and hopefully, if i do well, I'll be offered a Student Nurse Associate position for the fall. I just have to wait for my official offer of employment. I should be working by mid-June and the money is BEAUTIFUL!! Not to mention a once in a lifetime opportunity to work at a world-famous cardiology hospital!!

Then, to complicate things, the camp director called me yesterday and left me a message. He told me he still wanted me to work and that if i never received the first application packet, he had a second ready to send out and he wanted to interview me ASAP. WTF...so basically the guy abandons me for weeks and expects I'm still on my toes ready to do this camp? And "I have a second app packed prepared in case you didn't get the other one"...meaning u never sent it and u know it.

So here is my dillema....
Move away to a camp (if i get the job) and spend 3 months in the woods doing nothing related to my future career but have a blast, even if the boss is irresponsible.
Work at HUH and get the experience of a lifetime that will benefit me on my journey into Pediatric Cardiology.

Now, here is the bigger problem. I'm supposed to call the camp guy ASAP. But HUH will prolly not get to me with an official offer of employment for at least a few days. Technically, I don't have a job but the nurse manager offered it to me unofficially. So what do I do. I went from no job to two possibilities and they are soooooooo different.....what do I do?? Do I close the door to the camp job and risk not getting offered the hospital position for some odd reason? Do I take the camp and possible end my chances of working for the DMC? WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Any input would be greatly appreciated cause I'm going nuts here!

Right now

Apr. 20th, 2006 | 08:42 am
mood: crushed crushed

So things are kinda eh right now.

Two days ago i got one of the worst phone calls in a long time. I e-mailed my boss at the city about how i didn't get many OU rec hours and how i wanted to put some hours in at the camp before it started getting thing set up (like i've done the past 3-4yrs). Well, about 10 min later I get a phone call from my boss. Now all weekend I received messages and phone calls from everyone who had worked the City's easter egg hunt Saturday (i couldn't make it) telling me "we all got our jobs back!" "i know you got yours back" "we're all coming back it's gonna be great"! Yea, well, my boss could barely mantain composure when she informed me that I "just make too much" and that I was denied in her budget proposal.
Ok, so it's a little camp job, right? WRONG! This is the camp I've been at all my life, it's like my comfort zone, my home away from home. It would be my 8th summer as a counselor and my planned last summer cause I graduate next year. I love that job. I love the kids, the counselors, being outside all day...it's what i wanted to do one last time and I'm the one they chose to cut, the one with most seniority and who they know absolutely LOVES that job.
So I offered to take a pay cut so my salary went along with the salaries of those being brought back. I mean shez, I was only .45c over the salary limit. 45c is not a big deal when you're doing something you love and only for 6-8 wks. But she told me "i'll propose it but things don't ususally work that way".
So there goes the money I planned on using to pay my tuition next year....I don't make enough at the rec nor enough hours...I am lost right now. This was my last summer to NOT be in a hospital working so I just don't know if that's the route I want to take? I don't know, this realy shook me up something bad.

I miss everyone there already! And it hurts to think they are interviewing brand new staff. I mean, I'm happy for the new counselors, they'll love it, but it's sad i won't be there and it isn't by choice. I don't understand how 2 counselors of relatively high seniority quit on their own and that doesn't allow enough in the budget for me? I don't get it...this sucks. So I'm looking into nursing assistant positions at residence camps or possibly just working a lot of hours at the rec. There were some things my bosses their wanted me to work on this summer so maybe I can get some office hours. We'll see....

To my camp people....I LOVE YOU GUYS AND I'LL DEFINITELY VISIT!!! You all have a wonderful summer!

Well, I have to go get ready. Shanny and I are renewing our licenses today (we're gonna be 21!!) and then studying for our final at 3:30! BYE YA'LL!

Tuesday morning my mommy is having her second surgery of the year. I pray this will end so many years of pain for her. I know she has to have this done and I know she is in good hands but I can't help worrying.

If you pray or just keep people in your thoughts, I would appreciate it deeply if my Mom could be in yours for the next week or two. The first 10 days are the absolute hardest on her and all of us.

Thank you.
